IZA KOCZANOWSKA

based in ☁️ / Rotterdam / Warsaw

An interdisciplinary artist and set designer whose work combines research with spatial and relational practices.

I grew up in a post-communist country, where my interest in systemic transitions—from communism to capitalism—and in sanatoriums as a form of accessible tourism first took shape. Over time, these interests evolved to include environmental and bodily extraction, as well as migration and post-colonial politics—concerns I further encountered while living in various places. My background is in interior design, from which I have gradually moved toward an interdisciplinary, relational practice.

I am particularly intrigued by different forms, causes, and consequences of overtourism and extractivism, as well as by questions surrounding the instability of narratives in contemporary living conditions—especially as they pertain to marginalized beings—and the dialogues that emerge between various bodies, objects, and spaces. I am also drawn to the tension between rapid technological development, AI, and the narratives it shapes, alongside a nostalgia for forms of spirituality and forms of escape.

Through experimenting with different temporalities, quasi-documentation, and site-specific characteristics of places, I often develop sculptural forms that incorporate performative, interactive, and ephemeral elements, as well as interventions as relational installations. These works generate their own dynamics, reflecting and engaging with the complexities of a post-human reality.
