IZA KOCZANOWSKA

I (she/her) am a Polish artist and set designer based in the Netherlands / Poland / ☁️. I combine research with spatial and relational forms of practice.

I grew up in a post-communist country, where my early interests in systemic transitions—from communism to capitalism—and in sanatoriums as accessible infrastructures of tourism first took shape. Over time, these concerns expanded into questions of environmental and bodily extraction, migration, and post-colonial politics, further shaped by living in different places and encountering their specific frictions and histories.

My background in interior design gradually shifted, both materially and conceptually, into a relational practice. My research focuses on overtourism, extractivism, and techno-progressivism, alongside human and non-human coping mechanisms such as hauntology, escapism, and forms of adaptation. I explore the potential of collective forms of re-healing, inspired by senatorial and communal modalities.

I develop a dialogue from my research and formal experimentation through small models and sculptural, often ephemeral, bio-material installations. By experimenting with space, different temporalities, quasi-documentation, and speculative realms, I create forms that incorporate performative, interactive, and relational elements. I work alone, but also collaborate with other artists or lead workshops focused on storytelling and tactile materiality, exploring collective modes of engagement, reflection, and rebuilding.
